Hebert Assorted Fudge Pieces

No one knows exactly how or when fudge was first invented, but culinary legend says it was likely produced by accident in the United States sometime in the nineteenth century.

The main ingredients are sugar, butter, and milk. Here at the Hebert Candy Mansion we still make it the old fashioned way; by hand in small batches in our copper kettles. We love fudge, so we’ve decided to put together some fun facts about it for you to enjoy.

Tails of the Easter Bunny

by Liza Leeds March 11, 2015

Peter Cottontail:

We all know the Easter Bunny as that little guy who comes early in the morning on Easter Sunday to bring baskets filled with chocolates and candy to good little boys and girls.

The bunny was chosen as the icon because the rabbit is known for its fertility and is, therefore, the symbol of “new life.”

Although no one knows for sure exactly what the Easter Rabbit’s origins are,

Valentine's Day - Not Just for Romance

by Liza Leeds January 23, 2015

Some of my best Valentine’s Day memories are from my childhood.

For at least two weeks before THE BIG DAY, all of us kids would get together and spend hours cutting heart shapes, making those paper doilies, and writing notes and cards.  Of course, they weren’t addressed to anyone in particular, since it assured that every kid would get a card—no one was to be left out.

DECADENT AND HEALTHY??

by Liza Leeds January 05, 2015

You’d think Healthy Brownie would be a contradiction in terms, but, yes, Virginia, there really is such a thing.

Just use ingredients like spinach or other greens, zucchini or black beans. You can also add pumpkin; just be sure to use 100% pure canned pumpkin and not the pie filling, which is probably loaded with sugar. Pumpkin, by the way, is also a super food.

Then make some easy swaps, such as coconut oil instead of butter, or a ...

Everyone thinks a lot about gratitude during the Thanksgiving-New Year holiday season. It’s time to review, refresh and make new goals. Why are you grateful? We’ll start!

We’re grateful for:

1. Chocolate: Well, you knew we’d say that didn’t you? We have some of the finest candies, pops and more….which leads us to….

by Liza Leeds December 18, 2014

“For the last 4 years we have been coming in to visit the Easter bunny and Santa in Shrewsbury.  I would like to share 2 things with you. First when my daughter was 2 she was extremely scared of the bunny at the mall.  We heard you had one and thought we would try coming and checking it out.

Love Your Winter White…. Chocolate, That Is

by Liza Leeds December 09, 2014

Fun Fact: White chocolate was introduced to the U.S. by Hebert Candies founder, Frederick Hebert in 1956 after tasting the “white coat” candies in Europe. So he commissioned confectioner August Merckens to create a recipe. Mr. Hebert brought it to his Springfield, MA., where it enjoyed an immediate success.

Fun Fact: White chocolate has less caffeine than milk or dark chocolate and that’s because cocoa butter,...

You CAN keep summer alive.

by Liza Leeds November 05, 2014

Autumn is a great time--especially if you live in Massachusetts-- what with the colorful foliage and crisp blue skies.

Many mourn the ending of those lazy, hazy days of summer; in fact, one person said, when talking about the return to standard time, “I’d gladly forfeit that extra hour of sleep for more sunlight.”

Here’s the good news-- you CAN keep summer alive, even when the temperatures dip into the 20s.

Is CHOCOLATE good for you?

by Liza Leeds October 31, 2014

Some say it’s the food of the gods, but others say it’s the fare of devils.

One thing is clear, though—more and more studies are showing that chocolate and its main ingredient, cacao, is packed with vitamins and is thought to lower blood pressure, increase blood flow, reduce inflammation and ultimately contribute to a healthy heart. …as long as it’s dark and contains at least 60 percent cacao. In fact, a  dark chocolate bar can have as many antioxidants...

by Kristi Gunster February 13, 2014 1 Comment

By Anna (5 years old), as explained to her Mommy

The Chocolate Easter Bunny is the very best part of my Easter Basket because it’s from the Easter Bunny. And it’s chocolate. If you could make a chocolate shape of yourself and give it to someone, then that would be the very best thing you could give them.

Chocolate Easter Eggs

by Kristi Gunster February 11, 2014

Eggs are a traditional symbol of fertility, spring and rebirth. In earliest tradition, bird eggs were painted in pastels or festive colors to celebrate Easter. Modern Easter eggs have taken a turn towards the confectionery. The favorite, of course, is chocolate. Chocolate Easter eggs are hidden on most every egg hunt for the lucky finder’s enjoyment and are a staple in every Easter basket worth its salt (or shall we say, sugar).
